The American Cheese Society

By , About.com Guide

What:

Founded in 1983, the organization provides networking and educational opportunities for American cheesemakers. Members also include retailers, individuals in the food industry, small businesses and corporate sponsors. According to the American Cheese Society, membership "is available to anyone involved in the trade or simply passionate about American-made specialty and artisanal cheeses."

Where:

Members live all over the United States. Once a year, the society meets in a different city for the American Cheese Society conference.

Why:

Cheesemakers and retailers share information about production, marketing and distribution. The annual conference is a highlight, especially the judging portion where cheeses compete for various awards. One cheese is always chosen as "Best in Show."
