Cheese for the the crisp days of Fall


The crisp days of Autumn bring cravings of richer foods, like cheese. Enjoy theses autumnal cheeses with a glass of apple cider, hard cider , or sparkling cider.

Rogue River Blue Cheese

Rogue Creamery in Oregon has mastered the art of making blue cheese. In 2009 their 'Rogue River Blue won the top honor of Best in Show at the American Cheese Society Conference. This blue is made from raw milk and wrapped in grape leaves harvested from an Oregon vineyard and macerated in pear brandy made in Oregon. The cheese has sweet and earthy notes of pine and hazelnut with a hint of fruitiness from that pear brandy. Rogue River Blue is released to cheese shops in the fall and can also be ordered directly from Rogue Creamery's website.

If your cheese shop doesn't sell Rogue River Blue, look for other fantastic blue cheeses made by Rogue Creamery: Smokey Blue, Oregonzola or Crater Lake Blue.

Smoked Cheddar

The gentle aroma of smoke on a fall day is sure sign that the weather is getting cooler and fireplaces are being lit. Smoked cheddar cheese is a delicious snack on a fall day. Serve smoked cheddar with sliced apples or melt it into a bowl of macaroni and cheese. Look for smoked cheddar from Tillamook, Grafton Village and Beecher's Handmade Cheese.

Comte is a French cheese with a subtle Swiss-like flavor that develops into more complex flavors of hazelnuts, fresh hay and caramel. The texture is semi-hard and incredibly rich. Comte is a good choice for snacking and for autumn recipes that call for cheese.

Rhinette is a cows' milk cheese from Germany. The rind is brushed with apple cider while the cheese ages, which imparts a very subtle fruity flavor. The cheese is semi-soft and pairs well with salami and autumn fruit.

Pecorino Foglie di Noce

Pecorino Foglie di Noce (FOH-leeay dee NO-cheh) is an aged sheep milk cheese from Italy wrapped in Walnut leaves. The leaves impart an earthy flavor and cheese is rich and nutty with a fair amount of saltiness.
