Swiss Cheese Bread Recipe

Swiss Cheese Bread

This is an old recipe that still tastes as good as it did when I was a kid. Sticking with tradition, I used sliced Swiss cheese but you can get a little fancier if you like and use slices of genuine Swiss cheeses like Gruyere, Appenzeller,or Raclette.

This Swiss cheese bread recipe makes one loaf of bread, approximately 8-12 slices

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf of French bread
  • 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) butter
  • 1 small onion (red or yellow), finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons poppyseeds
  • 12-15 thin slices Swiss cheese

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 375

Slice the loaf of bread (each slice about 1 inch thick) but don't cut all the way through the bottom of the loaf

In a pan over medium heat melt the butter and add onions, sauteing until onions are soft. Add poppyseeds then pour the mixture between all the slices of bread.

Put 1-2 slices of cheese between each slice of bread. Wrap the bread in foil, but leave the top open. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the top of the bread is slightly brown. Serve immediately
